Phil Coke may be cure for Tigers' bullpen
Kansas City, MO - Phil Coke launched two sites Thursday night against the Royals. Mike Moustakas reached the second step, without danger, Casper Wells in centerfield.
"It was one of the huge," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said Friday.
And hopes that it is also a sign of a pen about to finally adjust. Coke's brief appearance in the seventh inning - with runners on first and second outs and two - helped build strong start against Kansas City Max Scherzer.
On Friday night, Coca-Cola launched the eighth inning, giving up one hit and the issuance of a bar.
Now that Coca-Cola is back in the bullpen, Leyland is counting on him and Al Alburquerque (one week back from the DL with forearm inflammation) to solidify the seventh inning.
This gives the starters more room for error if Leyland is capable of using Coke or Alburquerque followed by Joaquin Benoit and Jose Valverde.
"It would be a pretty good combination," Leyland said. "If (coke) as the location is it capable of pitching, it would be exactly what the doctor ordered."
Despite a relatively high ERA - 4.81 game entering Friday - Tigers bullpen held in conduit.Detroit save percentage was 83 the highest in the American League.
Leyland thinks his bullpen can improve.
"We really do not get it settled all year," he said. "It's nobody's fault. I mean, (Ryan) Perry struggled to start ... (Brayan ) Villarreal fought. You raise an Oliveros (Lester). You bring Villarreal. Alburquerque is on and off. (We) just have not been able to get fully aligned, the bullpen in total. "
Thursday night, the last three innings showed that could change.
"I think the bullpen will be fine," he said.
INJURY UPDATE: Leyland said Austin Jackson (sore left wrist) will not be in the starting lineup after the All Star break. Leyland said X-rays showed no broken bone and the wrist should be fine. Jackson was a pinch-runner in the ninth Friday and stayed in the game to play center. Leyland said he would take Jackson or decay if left turn in the batting order comes this weekend.
