Film soundtrack packs a punch

NEXT grade: B

One of the more fun movies to come out this year was Director Zack Snyder's "Sucker Punch," a gorgeously disjoined, if flawed, action-imagination flick.

Part of the reason the film was so intriguing was its well put-together soundtrack, on which lesser-known musicians redo seven good to great new-wave and classic rock tunes.

Two other of the soundtrack's nine songs are enhanced original recordings. One cut is by Britrock band Skunk Anansie, which remixes and adds parts to "Army of Me" by Björk. And there's a rap version of Queen's "I Want It All" mashed up with "We Will Rock You."

I was especially impressed with the movie's action-packed dream sequences featuring lead character Babydoll (Emily Browning). Her character enters these amazing sequences to survive her insane asylum surroundings.

One of the best things about the soundtrack is that Browning actually sings on four of the songs.

Right off the bat, she makes an impression with her smooth and somewhat spooky version of the Eurythmics' classic single, "Sweet Dreams."

Browning exudes a certain vulnerability in her voice that she can leave behind (with her voice and attitude becoming much stronger) when the song requires it. The actor's vocal ability underlines her wronged and damaged character, who is forced to turn into a brave protagonist.

With the addition of a strong forward beat to an eerie church organ in "Sweet Dreams" and a sense of blaring horns, it's a great introductory number to the movie's soundtrack.

Björk's "Army of Me" touts a dreamy intro and a full punched-up middle section, including screams and metal guitar lines and a sort of clubby freak-out that is quite effective before returning to the powerful grind of the original Björk tune.

Icelandic singer Emiliana Torrini adds a spacey intro and mid section to Jefferson Airplane's '60s psychedelic "White Rabbit" before singing a strong and pretty straightforward version of the great tune.
