Stop the Clocks – Tin Box

Is the first of many things. She is the first production of the theater box Tin emerging company recently founded by Newman and Jo Jo Gleave. This is the first piece of art to suggest using the disused Newman Brothers Coffin fittings factory in central Birmingham and they are also the first theater group to have access to it. Inspired by the history of the plant and the personal testimonies of ex-employees, is the story of life and death of 'Marie' a fictitious employee. But this is no ordinary indulgence morbid illness and life at the factory. It is one of the most uplifting and life-affirming pieces I have seen in a long while. Other theatre companies will no doubt be beating down the door for their turn in the fantastic space, but they will have a lot of trouble topping this magical production.

The piece is site-specific in every sense of the term. The setting, props, and story are all inspired by and designed to suit every nook and cranny of the building. Combined with this, the interactive, promenade nature of the performance encapsulates everything that is unique and exciting about the medium of theatre. The piece could never have been created or be performed anywhere else, and there is something exhilarating about its temporary and unique nature. With just ten people in the audience at a time, it feels like you have been let in on a secret.

Warned to dress warmly and wear comfortable shoes, we are met in the courtyard by a smiley chorus singing Irish folk tunes and told that to commemorate the life of Mary we shall hear her story. The audience is led into the factory and taken through different rooms that traverse through Mary’s life. Each room is a different stage in her life and is told in a way specific to that time. Mary’s most striking memory of childhood is her garden shed and here we sit and smell the herbs, hear the rain, and touch the soil in the plant pots in a fully sensory experience reminiscent of children’s theatre. Following Mary’s teenage years we are appropriately led to a dark room where the time flies past in a frantic, but hugely entertaining shadow puppet sequence. Thereon we go on to Mary’s adult life; love, work, family, illness and inevitably, death.
