Sensory garden 'a place for everybody'

Napanee District Secondary School students have a new place on campus to study, relax or just enjoy a quiet lunch.

It's the school's new sensory garden, completed by the last weeks of exams by a group of the student body's exceptional members.

The space -- a landscaped garden with seating, colorful flowers and much more -- reflects months of hard work.

"I hope all the students here will find this a nice, peaceful place to be," said 16-year-old Robert Putrus of Newburgh, who helped build the project.

"It is kind of like memories. I hope students can reflect ... be relaxed here."

The garden is the brainchild of teacher Gail Burtch, a school-to-community teacher who teaches students with defined exceptional, physical or developmental needs.

In 2009, the Limestone Learning Foundation gave her $5,000 for an "innovative learning project" to develop the courtyard area and create a therapeutic sensory garden for her students.

Over the years, the area had become overgrown with weeds, fallen trees and other debris, but Burtch, with more than two decades of teaching experience, wanted "her kids" to be directly involved and to create something for the entire school.

"I believe I work in a beautiful school in every sense," she said. "When we started with the project in earnest, teachers from all over the school and kids from all over the school came with donations of plants and materials to help.

"Though our students (were responsible for the project), it became a project for the entire school. That is what this place is about -- a place for everybody."

At the start, the design team envisioned a pathway for students who used wheelchairs so they could have a place to navigate easily outside at lunch time but the concept grew. Creating a space for reflection was added to the list.

"We wanted to have an impact ... to make something the entire student body could enjoy by making something they all could use and take part in," said teacher Greg Coens, another School-to- Community teacher, who eventually supervised and assisted several students during the construction of a pergola, a more complicated type of arbour.
