So much open source, so little time…

The Free Software Foundation has recently updated its recommendations guide license. While there are many developers looking to license their creations under open source license, with new projects arise at a rate of hundreds per day, there are many developers over the selection of components for open source applications and Batteries are assembling.

For the latter, what factors should you weigh in the selection among the half million available for open source projects? Accreditation is a concern and may be the key factor, but there are other very important considerations too.If your company has a policy of open source particularly complete, which should guide you, but only about 40% of companies even have policies.

1. License

As with most things in life, it depends ... in this case on the intended use and licensing for your project. Is your software not be distributed, and if so, under what license? If you distribute open source, lean towards the same or compatible OSS license. To distribute under a commercial license, avoid "copyleft" or "reciprocal" licenses like the GPL family and Mozilla Public License.

Generally, when the mixture of copyleft code with your own, you can not distribute the result under the same copyleft license, which requires making the source available. Better choices are permissive license like the BSD license, Apache and MIT, which are mainly just ask you to keep the allocation in the code.

Construction of an application for your own use or your internal business? A reciprocal license is fine, so the license should not be a factor. Do not take the long term, however, when considering this.Many an internal tool finally gets rolled into a product, so the work of appropriate licenses now fear that you have to extract the code later.

A model of "Tweener" use is a customer meet the demand, SaaS or free. Generally, users accessing your code through a browser does not raise licensing issues, however, there is a class of license for this scenario. AGPL is the best known example, and its obligations are triggered on users' interaction with (an application) remotely via a computer network.
