PV interview with lawyer Malvin Harding

I recently met Sierra Leonean-born lawyer Malvin Harding (photo) at a public function in downtown New Westminster, a few miles from Vancouver, the largest city in British Columbia , Western Canada.

At first I did not realize he was a Sierra Leonean because of his clipped British accent. I thought he was West Indian and asked him to confirm it. He roared with laughter and said in Krio: Bo mi na Salone man bo ! (Hey, I am a Sierra Leonean!). We embraced each other and started an animated conversation in Krio, much to the amusement and curiosity of my Canadian friends.

Malvin is an energetic and engaging conversationalist, very friendly. He is, to the best of my knowledge, the only Sierra Leonean-born practising lawyer in this part of Canada. He and his family recently relocated here from London, UK. I could not resist interviewing him for PV. Excerpts:

PV: Please introduce yourself to our readers.

Malvin Harding: I am a Barrister and Solicitor practicing in the areas of general civil litigation, and immigration law, here in British Columbia. Prior to establishing my practice here in BC, I practiced law in England, UK, for 18 years, before my wife and two teenage children emigrated to BC in early 2009.

PV: You and your family have been in Canada since 2009. How do you find life here compared to Britain?

MH: The Canadian population in general is much more tolerant. People here are much more friendly and helpful, and there are lots of opportunities for everyone, adults as well as children. We have and continue to seize the opportunity to embrace all that Canada offers us, emotionally, culturally, socially, economically and financially, and the journey for us has just begun.

PV: You are a specialist in immigration law and other branches of the law. There are a lot of people from developing countries living in Canada who are in urgent need of lawyers. How do you intend to help them?

MH: am constantly in contact with various immigrant communities and associations, promoting my legal service and expertise - this approach has proved to be very beneficial, not only for me, but also for many immigrants. As an immigrant myself, I am particularly aware of some of the challenges immigrants and their families face in emigrating and settling in a new country. Armed with my own personal experience, I am able to provide clients invaluable and effective legal assistance and representation in their respective legal problems. In areas of law I do not practice, I am able to refer them to other lawyers for assistance.
