The REO Veiling defines itself in different ways. "An advantage of Roeselare, in Belgium, is that there are a lot of family businesses here. This means we can play into the demand for special products or packaging flexibly. It's easier too for these companies to switch in business. I strongly believe in this." Dominiek thinks the introduction of Flandria in '95 was a good move. "We now have around 65 Flandria products in our range. "Besides the Flandria quality label we also supply Tomabel. This range may become more extensive in the future too."



Courgette supply increased more than fivefold
In the area of products there are diverse developments visible. "Leek is the vegetable that is supplied most. There is a large increase visible in courgettes, in 10 years time it has increased more than fivefold. The strawberry is a fast grower too." Some products aren't going quite as well. "Such as mushrooms and greenhouse lettuce." Dominiek names various reasons for this. "The mushrooms are having to deal with Polish competition and the greenhouse lettuce has to compete with all the other types of lettuce that are available."




EHEC-crisis: Collaborating with all the links
These aren't the only reasons why the sales of certain products are decreasing. The EHEC-crisis has had a huge impact in Belgium. Especially Russia is a big buyer of Belgian greenhouse vegetables. "During this situation we've learnt to collaborate with all the links," says Dominiek. "Although the interests of the producer and the trader don't always match, it's still important to work together. This has all had a phenomenal impact on the branch.
