Fundraiser supports Hustler family
The saying goes what goes around comes around and Shawna "Taz" Maki, of Hustler, is about to find out exactly what that means.
Maki has been helping people for most of her life. She has pitched in to help friends and neighbors and is in the process of helping take down a neighbor's garage.
She was surprised to find the tables turned as her family will be on the receiving end of help from people in Camp Douglas, Hustler and New Lisbon from a benefit Saturday, July 16.
Maki has two children with autism and a home in need of repairs.
She said, "I didn't know that Sue and Karl [Henthorn, owners of the K-n-S Pitstop Bar and Grill] and Biker Trash [motorcycle group] were going to do this. I am like the mother of everybody and that day I'm not going to take care of anyone else ..."
She has been working with the organizers of the fundraiser and poker run to be held at the Camp Douglas bar.
"The part I am doing is bringing awareness of autism to people," Maki said. "It is like families helping the next family along. My house is like a Habitat for Humanity house in Hustler."
She said the house needs some windows replaced and a new exterior door with a window in it, along with a new roof for the garage.
Her son Gabe Lewis, 4, has mild autism, she said.
"He is in the repetitive stage and is mirror-imaging you," Maki said. "He speaks a few new words each day, which is a big milestone."
She said he connects words with actions, such as saying "drink" when he wants water.
Anna Lewis, 3, has severe autism.
"When Anna is on the deck, she screams and likes to listen to the echoes back," Maki said. "She is a very intelligent child but can not tell you what she wants. She is not able to ask for water, but takes my hand and leads me to the refrigerator [to show me]."
The children need much assistance in their lives and constant attention from Maki to keep them safe.
She said, "God gave me these children for a reason and I am going to take care of them.
