Lincoln dad gets 7-10 for baby's skull fracture
A judge sent a 35-year-old Lincoln dad to prison Wednesday for an assault that sent his 3-month-old daughter to the hospital with a skull fracture.
Jonathan Znomist, who pleaded no contest, turned down an offer to say anything before the judge gave him seven to 10 years for attempted first-degree assault.
He's already served more than a year.
But his attorney, John Jorgensen of the Public Defender's Office, asked for probation or time served, saying Znomist had "rather significant deficits" in intellectual functioning and he disputed the level of his culpability for the child's injuries.
He said Znomist wanted to take a parenting class and anger management, though he realized his parental rights would be terminated.
The girl and her older sister both were removed from the home as a result of the incident.
Chief Deputy County Attorney Pat Condon argued for imprisonment, citing the violent way Znomist demonstrated to police he struck the child.
"This is a child that is completely helpless," he said.
On May 7, 2010, after Znomist's wife, Crystal, took their 3-month-old daughter, Gabrielle, to the hospital with a swollen eye, tests revealed the child had a skull fracture and four healing fractured ribs.
Jonathan Znomist later told police he had been stressed and not getting enough sleep when his 4-year-old daughter woke up crying in the middle of the night May 3. Frustrated, he told the officer he had taken his anger out on the baby by hitting her on the back of her head with his elbow.
He said she got the swollen eye when he was burping her, she sneezed and jolted her face into his knee.
